Rating System

Our rating system attempts to give equal weight to the treatment of human rights issues and the underlying literary quality. While it is difficult to separate the literary from the factual, we believe there is value in doing so. Some works may prove more instructive, while others may be damn good reads.

The system is based on a scale of 1-10. The human rights rating comes first.

A work rated 7|4 means that it has a human rights rating of 7 and a literary rating of 4 . This would be a book that is mostly useful in informing the reader about human rights issues.

A work rated 3|9 would have a human rights rating of 3 and a literary rating of 9. This would be a great story with a weak or understated treatment of human rights.

Books with high marks in each category are highly recommended by FictionthatMatters.org.
